St John’s College, Cambridge
£1,500.00
The beautiful city of Cambridge is a special draw for me, as it is for many painters. It’s somewhere I’ve gotten to know well over the years. And I don’t mind boasting that it’s developed into a pretty slick operation to leave the house in Stamford and be walking across Jesus Green within the hour. I usually start proper at the top of St. Johns Street and follow it as it swoops around St Johns College, heading south. The light on this stretch of road is remarkable, especially during the golden hours of the day. There’s terrific play of scale here too, as there is to be found all over Cambridge.
‘St John’s College, Cambridge’ was started late into the afternoon on a barmy sunny day last summer. I was on my way back to the car, as it had been a long day in the sun, when I came across this view of St. John’s College. Finding a spot in the shade, I set about painting the scene. The lengthening shadows make it important to really attack the painting and be bold with your decision-making. There’s little time to capture the initial effect; however, it’s worth making a mental note of how it feels so you can draw on that after the light has changed.
