Even in winter, I prefer to work early. On Regent Street it was still dark when I set up my easel. The overlap between night workers heading home and day workers arriving created a striking sense of parallel lives unfolding simultaneously.
The sun never broke through, and the day remained uniformly grey—an ideal opportunity to practise restraint. Muted colour allowed the architecture to hold its presence, while higher chroma signs, clothing, and artificial lights punctuated the surface. The painting is about balance: structure against movement, neutrality against intensity.
