Standing at the top of these steps offers a view of London that contains everything I want to paint. The foreground demanded careful, accurate drawing; the steps themselves were awkward but essential. Beyond them, I allowed the drawing to loosen as distance increased.
Looking back on older work often invites revision, but there is little I would change here. The painting feels honest to the experience of being in that place on that day. For that reason, it remains one of my most satisfying works.
