Back in Wells-Next-The-Sea, but on the search for something a little out of the ordinary. I’m as interested in the visitors and the amusements as much as the boats in the harbour. And having arrived on a damp grey day in June, I decided to make the less attractive scenes the focus of the painting. There’s a strange atmosphere on dull days like this, and as the rain started to fall, I resigned to set up under the eaves of the amusement arcade. It turned out to be a good move, as most visitors were congregating here out of the rain. It gave me some action, at least. Fortunately, the dark clouds moved along, and it started to lighten up as the day went on. Anybody who knows Wells-Next-The-Sea will know ‘Frenchies Chippy’—In the summer there’s a que down the street!
