I travelled to New York with my paints, intending to work wherever opportunity presented itself. In truth, I found Manhattan overwhelming, and that intensity inevitably fed into the paintings I produced—this one included. New York contains everything I both admire and struggle with: scale, energy, ambition, and also visible hardship. All of it presses in at once.
Looking back, I might have ventured further afield into quieter districts—Brooklyn or the Bronx—but there is always the temptation to believe something better lies just around the corner. I’ve learned to let that impulse go. What matters is not finding the perfect location, but being present and painting wherever you are.
This work reflects that acceptance: a direct response to the city as it revealed itself, complex and unapologetic.
