Russell Square Station is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.
It was here that I trained as an ‘Around the World’ travel consultant—an unexpected detour after a year of traveling and three years at Fine Art College. London, with its energy and endless possibilities, became my home. That brief career in the travel industry may not have lasted, but it shaped my experience of the city and, most importantly, led me to meet my wife. Without whom, who knows where I’d be?
Now, 23 years later, the feeling remains the same when I round the corner and see Russell Square Station’s red-tiled façade. My eyes are drawn up to the towering Kimpton Fitzroy Hotel, its distinctive architecture glowing in the morning sun—rich orange against a clear blue sky. University students mill about, shifting between sunlight and shadow. The cold shade lingers, and I know it will be hours before the sun reaches me. Capturing this fleeting interplay of light is a challenge, but I embrace it, gathering the essential details on-site before refining the piece later in the studio.
