The Jubilee on The Strand is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.
In 2022, I painted on The Strand during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. With roads closed, it was possible to work in places normally inaccessible, without the constant concern of traffic. The atmosphere was charged—crowds, police presence, anticipation.
As the sun moved around, it briefly clipped the Union Jacks lining my side of the street before they fell back into shadow. In retrospect, I might have exaggerated this rhythm of flags more strongly to draw the viewer down the street. It remains an adjustment I may yet make.
