Morning mist has lifted, Blakeney is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.
I had traveled from Stamford to Blakeney, expecting a bright, sunny day perfect for painting. Instead, heavy fog followed me all the way there. Despite the change in plans, I decided to paint Blakeney Harbour from the shoreline end of town, hoping the sun would soon break through. But the fog lingered, thick and unyielding.
Undeterred, I moved to my original spot at the western end of the harbour, setting up on a slight mound that offered a view down into the harbour. From there, I had a clear sight of the iconic Blakeney Hotel—a familiar landmark for anyone who’s visited this popular crabbing spot on the North Norfolk coast. It’s a fantastic painting location, one I’ve captured many times before from slightly different angles. Arriving early also has its perks, like free parking. The convenience of an old-fashioned public toilet at the other end of town, along with a pub, cafes, and now even a bakery, makes it a perfect spot. It seems the love for jam scones has made its way from Cornwall and Devon to North Norfolk.
It wasn’t until late afternoon that the fog finally lifted, allowing the colours to emerge. I worked until early evening, capturing the day’s transformation. A few children, who had likely finished school early, began crabbing by the water’s edge—just what I needed to complete a lovely day of painting in Blakeney.
