St Martins Lane, London is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.
St. Martins Lane is a really interesting street. It runs parallel to the main road, Charing Cross Road, and leads down to the impressive Trafalgar Square area. Looking south, you get a wonderful view of the Coliseum and the theatres running down the street. At the bottom, there’s also the spire of St. Martin’s in the fields church.
I’d set up on the edge of the wide pavement and began painting at about 5 p.m. I started as usual by mapping out the composition and blocking in the tones. Before long, it was dark, and I had to adjust my tones to get the effect I wanted. Which was the transition into night. Needless to say, with all the decorations and evening lights coming on, there was a lot to do. I had to do quite a lot of work in the studio to get the painting to a place where I was happy with it.
