The Flatiron from 5th is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.

Painted en plein air in New York City.
Early on my second morning of painting in New York, I found a small, sheltered spot with a clear view of the Flatiron Building. Moving south from Times Square brought a welcome sense of calm. I hoped the sun might break through, but after a couple of hours I was already committed to the subdued greys of the morning and chose to stay with them.
Grey, for me, is never a compromise. It offers subtlety, structure, and space for later accents. Toward the end of the painting, small moments of chroma—traffic lights, cones, passing details—bring the surface to life. I’m always conscious not to overdo it; restraint often says more than excess.
This painting balances solidity and atmosphere, keeping the architecture grounded while allowing the city to breathe.
