Victoria Embankment towards Waterloo Bridge is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.
Nick Grove paints London scenes and landscapes in oil.
I began this painting early in the morning along Victoria Embankment. My intention was simply to walk the river until something held my attention—but experience has taught me that the first moment of recognition is often the right one. Hesitation can lead to endless searching, and sometimes to not painting at all.
From this spot, the view down the Thames opened naturally. A small group of moored boats occupied the foreground, while details along the river wall helped anchor the composition. I was particularly drawn to the dolphin lamps that line the Embankment. One was placed deliberately within the composition, and I worked carefully to suggest the carved form without over-describing it. Nearby sycamores still held traces of colour, and the lifebuoy introduced a necessary accent of red into an otherwise restrained palette.
The painting is built largely around greys—though not dull or inert ones. For me, grey is among the most expressive of colours. Warm and cool greys describe much of what we see in the natural world, especially in urban landscapes and shifting light. I often begin by mixing a range of light, mid, and dark greys, using them to control chroma and bring cohesion to the painting. They allow colour to breathe, filling transitions and holding the whole together.
This work is as much about observation as restraint—finding quiet structure and atmosphere in an unassuming moment beside the river.
