Back to Life is a studio painting created in 2022 to commemorate a return to relative normality after the COVID pandemic of 2020. I had painted London before, during, and after the pandemic, and this area in particular was and still is a constant draw for me. The light throughout the day in Piccadilly has moments of pure magic. Especially in the summer, when the evening sun floods down Piccadilly from the west, as it does here in this artwork. This large oil painting is the culmination of many preliminary sketches. The figures are all real people, or at least parts of real people, mixed together. Mixing together in a literal sense is something we all missed during the pandemic years, and you will never find a more diverse mix of people than right here in the centre of London.
