Kingsway, London

£2,250.00

Kingsway is a typical London scene that attracts my attention. It is usually the first impression of the light that makes me stop and review a scene as a possible painting, which was the case with this painting of London. I’d walked the length of Kingsway on my way to Fleet Street and The Strand when I was struck by the play of light on Bush House which refracted the light up Kingsway bouncing of all the light stone and creating an usual lighting effect. I kept on walking, getting closer and closer to Bush House, until I’d created a composition I was happier with. The well-known coffee chains on the right create a nice contrast that cuts into the light, and there were the usual elements I love to use in my London paintings such as the iconic a red telephone box, a streetlamp, and people, of course. While I was painting, I saw a couple of coaches park up on the left, which cut out a lot of the light; however, I couldn’t paint with confidence that which I could not see; hence, the coaches made it into the painting. When plein-air painting in such locations you have to accept that things can change.
