New Cavendish Street, Marylebone is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.
Painted en plein air by Nick Grove.
Marylebone is a part of London I visit regularly, often when delivering work to galleries. On this occasion, I was also completing a commission to paint Marylebone High Street, ideally with the cherry blossom that briefly transforms the area each spring. It was slightly early in the season, though I allowed myself a little artistic licence to suggest what was soon to come.
New Cavendish Street, Marylebone was an additional painting made that same day, and a more truthful reflection of a British spring morning. I was drawn to the warm, earthy tones of the buildings, reminiscent of burnt sienna. As it was a Sunday, the street was quiet, with little traffic and few pedestrians. The air was colder than expected, though a kindly gesture from a local café owner—a hot cup of coffee delivered unprompted—made the conditions far more bearable. It’s a kindness I’ve experienced more than once while painting in London.
This work is about restraint and observation: colour held gently, light diffused, and the city momentarily at rest.
