Upper Street Islington is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.

Upper Street Islington

Painted from life, this piece holds the sensation of a moment that was there and then gone. In urban scenes, the challenge is to keep the architecture solid while letting the atmosphere stay open and lived-in.

It’s about atmosphere more than detail—how the place felt, not just how it looked. Working from life allowed small truths—temperature, colour shifts, and subtle tonal relationships—to steer the decisions.

It carries the calm satisfaction of something observed carefully and translated honestly.

The top of Shaftesbury Avenue is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.

Landscapes and cityscapes of London.

This work begins with direct observation—light, structure, and atmosphere held in balance. The focus is on truthful relationships—value, colour, and the quiet drama of ordinary surroundings.

What mattered here was the rhythm of the forms and the way the light organised the whole scene. Working from life allowed small truths—temperature, colour shifts, and subtle tonal relationships—to steer the decisions.

Ultimately, it’s an invitation to slow down and notice what’s already there.

Summertime on Silver Street Bridge, Cambridge is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.

This work begins with direct observation—light, structure, and atmosphere held in balance. In urban scenes, the challenge is to keep the architecture solid while letting the atmosphere stay open and lived-in.

What mattered here was the rhythm of the forms and the way the light organised the whole scene. Brushwork is kept economical so the structure stays readable and the surface remains alive.

It carries the calm satisfaction of something observed carefully and translated honestly.

The Islington Tunnel, Regent’s Canal is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.

The Islington Tunnel, Regent’s Canal

A quiet study of place and passing weather, shaped by working on site and responding instinctively. The focus is on truthful relationships—value, colour, and the quiet drama of ordinary surroundings.

The aim was to keep it simple: strong shapes, believable light, and the feeling of being present. Working from life allowed small truths—temperature, colour shifts, and subtle tonal relationships—to steer the decisions.

It’s a record of being there, made with patience and conviction.

Dovehouse Green, Chelsea is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.

Large plein air painting by award-winning artist and RSMA member Nick Grove.

This work begins with direct observation—light, structure, and atmosphere held in balance. Water introduces movement and reflection, helping the whole scene breathe and shift as you look.

The subject is ordinary in the best way: familiar architecture and everyday light becoming unexpectedly moving. The painting was developed in a sequence of decisive passes, keeping the response fresh and unforced.

It carries the calm satisfaction of something observed carefully and translated honestly.

St Pauls Cathedral from Ludgate Hill is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.

St Pauls Cathedral from Ludgate Hill

Painted from life, this piece holds the sensation of a moment that was there and then gone. In urban scenes, the challenge is to keep the architecture solid while letting the atmosphere stay open and lived-in.

It’s about atmosphere more than detail—how the place felt, not just how it looked. The composition was chosen to emphasise depth and direction, letting the eye travel naturally through the scene.

It’s a small act of attention, offered as a lasting object.

The Gardeners Hut, Soho Square is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.
Original Oil paintings by award winning artist Nick Grove RSMA.

Nestled in the heart of Soho, just a few yards from the thoroughfares of Oxford Street, you will find the delightful Soho Square. It’s a relatively small square but it has a lot to offer. Proudly stood at its centre is Tudor-styled Gardeners Hut. Some urban legends suggest it hides a secret tunnel to Buckingham Palace, but we can safely dismiss that as a myth.

Despite its quirky, timbered appearance, the hut isn’t actually Tudor. It was built in 1925, cleverly designed to conceal something far more modern—an electricity substation for the Charing Cross Electricity Company. The station needed a private, above-ground entrance, and since there had been a hut on that spot since the 1870s, this new design served as a bit of architectural camouflage.

Nowadays the hut is little more than a shed. It’s filled with gardening tools, used to keep Soho Square prim and pretty.

St Martins Lane, London is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.

St. Martins Lane is a really interesting street. It runs parallel to the main road, Charing Cross Road, and leads down to the impressive Trafalgar Square area. Looking south, you get a wonderful view of the Coliseum and the theatres running down the street. At the bottom, there’s also the spire of St. Martin’s in the fields church.

I’d set up on the edge of the wide pavement and began painting at about 5 p.m. I started as usual by mapping out the composition and blocking in the tones. Before long, it was dark, and I had to adjust my tones to get the effect I wanted. Which was the transition into night. Needless to say, with all the decorations and evening lights coming on, there was a lot to do. I had to do quite a lot of work in the studio to get the painting to a place where I was happy with it.
