I stopped immediately when I saw the light filtering through the trees and framing St Martin-in-the-Fields. The Japanese term komorebi describes this effect perfectly—sunlight broken and scattered by leaves, creating a quiet, shifting pattern that holds the eye. It was just before rush hour, and with the streets unusually calm for that time of day, the scene felt momentarily suspended.
One of my aims for this trip was to work smaller and simpler—to try to say more with less. Putting intentions into practice is never straightforward, but in this first painting of the day I felt those aims had been realised. The composition, scale, and restraint all aligned, allowing the light to do most of the work
