Outside the St. Pancras Hotel

£1,500.00

St. Pancras Hotel stands tall as a beacon of Burnt Sienna, working so well with the green of the trees that line the pavement outside. Buses and phone boxes have their own deep reds too, deep and chromatically rich. Combine all this with wet surfaces and the greys of London folk going about their business, and you have a scene worthy of any artist.

The rain was coming down steady and had been all day. The misery of the commuters was noticed—no complimentary comments today. I was set up on the pavement, which probably didn’t help. Londoners don’t like it if you’re in their way. I’d tapped my see-through umbrella to the mast of my easle and [ercevered.

By muting the colours of the St. Pancras hotel tower relative to the foregorund, I could suggest the aerial perspective involved. The rain also has a muting effect on colour over distance, so I really exaggerated the relationship. Adding blue is an easy way to create aerial perspective as a rule, however, it’s not to be used without question. Looking, really looking, in each instance is really the key. Rules are there to be broken after all.
