Midday Church of San Giorgio Maggiore is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.

Painted en plein air by UK artist Nick Grove.
It is immediately apparent why Venice has drawn artists for centuries. The clarity and intensity of the light, at any hour of the day, is remarkable. This painting was made at midday in intense heat, working quickly and decisively under challenging conditions.
Travelling light, I worked with a small pochade box and a modestly sized panel prepared with a light ground. I deliberately limited my palette to just four colours: cerulean blue, raw sienna, raw umber, and titanium white. The restriction helped sharpen decisions and maintain clarity in the light.
Because the scene itself is relatively simple, tonal relationships became critical. The strength of the midday sun demanded high chroma, but also careful control. I established the architecture first, ensuring scale and proportion were accurate, before working the sky and water together as a single atmospheric unit. The passing boats provided just enough movement to complete the scene.
