I hope that the joy of being in Venice, with easel and paint, comes through in this painting. It’s enough by itself to just be here and to experience the noise and breath in the air of Venice, but to be painting! It is a very fine thing indeed. There really is something special about the light here. The way everything changes from morning to night is extraordinary. Here in San Marco, there is a special quality of light that brought me back several times during my trip. This is the middle one of three small paintings of the Basilica di San Marco which I painted from morning to night to attempt to capture the differing effects. You’ve got to be quick and discreet, though, because that’s what the paintings are about!
