Cambridge Circus, London

£1,500.00

Cambridge Circus holds a special place in my heart. It is here where I worked and partied as a younger man. Living in the East End, I travelled in this way, and as soon as I reached Cambridge Circus, I knew I’d arrived in London proper. From here you can venture towards the shops on Tottenham Court Road, the delights of Soho, the Theatre District, China Town, and Leicester Square. The whole of London spreads ahead from here.

It was already dark when I set up my easel between two scaffolding poles and posted a no-entry sign. Surely I was safe here. I had the shop lighting illuminate my canvas. Working at night, with all the noise and movement all around. The energy gets into the painting. Maybe the slight fear of the dark corners and strangers faces. I don’t mind painting in London during the day, but at night, there are also lots of people about. It’s part of the London buzz. I loved it when I lived here, and I still love it now.

Working at night, even under lighting, has its issues. Remember that the pain will be displayed indoors under natural and illuminated lighting, so every now and then, you need to take it off the easel and hold it under the best lighting you can find to check that you are not pitching the whole thing too light or too dark. It’s also worth remembering that although the highlights, such as street lights and car headlights, etc., don’t have to be pitched too bright as the surrounding darks mean you can vary the intensity. It looks false if you automatically go for the pure white, for example.
