Bright Light, Burnham Overy Staithe

Bright Light, Burnham Overy Staithe
Original oil painting by Norfolk artist and plein air painter Nick Grove

This painting captures one of my favourite places to stay when working along the North Norfolk coast. If you look closely, you’ll spot my trusty VW campervan, Uma, parked up in the scene — a familiar companion on many of my trips.

I was drawn to the striking high-key light effect created by the bright sky and the wet road. From the outset, I established my lightest and darkest values — the brightest being the reflection off the water, which became the anchor for the rest of the composition. I then worked outward, gauging the subtle shifts in value between the sky and road.

The darkest note sat beneath the nearest boats, though even that wasn’t especially deep, so careful judgement was needed to maintain the right balance of mid-values. I softened the edges of the distant landscape to suggest aerial perspective and kept the foreground sharper and more chromatically intense to draw the eye.

It’s also worth noting how painting contre-jour (facing into the light) naturally mutes colours — a challenge I embraced in this study of light, reflection, and atmosphere.

Each piece is created from life — a real place and time where I breath in what I perceive and attempt to show you, the viewer, what I see and how it makes me feel. My artistoc journey has led me to direct observation from life. An objective and subjective truth I can share.

I’m very fortunate to be increasingly receiving commissions for paintings from all over the world. It is a tremendous honor to be employed in such a way, and it is very much appreciated. Without the trust and generosity of patrons, many artists simply wouldn’t be working, including me.
