Bright Light, Burnham Overy Staithe is an original oil painting by Nick Grove.
If you look closely, you’ll notice my VW campervan, Uma, parked within the scene—a familiar companion on many of my painting trips. I was drawn to the high-key light created by the bright sky reflecting across the wet surface of the water and road. From the outset, I established the lightest and darkest values, allowing the brightest reflections to act as an anchor for the entire composition.
From there, the painting was built outward, carefully judging the subtle shifts in value between sky, water, and ground. The darkest notes sit beneath the nearest boats, though even these remain restrained, requiring careful balance across the mid-tones. To suggest depth, I softened the edges of the distant landscape while keeping the foreground sharper and more chromatically alive, guiding the viewer’s eye through the scene.
Painting contre-jour—directly into the light—naturally mutes colour. Rather than resisting this effect, I embraced it, allowing the painting to become a study of light, reflection, and atmosphere, shaped by direct observation and lived experience.
