Created during Nick Groves travels around Europe in 2023. This painting was exhibited as part of the ‘Venice’ exhibition hosted by Thompsons Gallery in Aldeburgh in 2024.
This work begins with direct observation—light, structure, and atmosphere held in balance. In urban scenes, the challenge is to keep the architecture solid while letting the atmosphere stay open and lived-in.
The aim was to keep it simple: strong shapes, believable light, and the feeling of being present. Rather than polishing, the goal was to preserve the immediacy of the first impressions.
It’s a small act of attention, offered as a lasting object.
