High Street, Wells-Next-The-Sea

£2,500.00

I was looking for something a little different the first time I was back in Wells-Next-The-Sea in 2024. I’d often considered the High Street as a potential painting location. It’s got everything an English seaside town should have. Such as a bucket and spade shop. A questionable outdoorsy type shop selling air rifles and pocket knives. There’s a new Boojee clientele moving in now too. Boojee bakeries and Boojee Bistro pubs. I had been put off painting here in the past because it’s very busy at the best of times. However, perhaps because it was a bit grey today, there weren’t as many tourists as usual.

I set up where I was relatively out of the way and tackled drawing all those buckets and spades and beach balls. And balancing the high chroma beach toys with the flat grey sky. It was a challenge for sure. A cup of coffee midway helped tremendously. I can usually paint for 3 hours before I’ve had enough. In this case, because it is a relatively large plein air painting, I struggled on for 4 hours in total. Even still, the painting required many more hours in the studio to complete.
