Towards the end of summer 2023, I made a final visit to the Suffolk coast, working around Southwold and further down to Aldeburgh. Although it had been a productive year, I hadn’t returned to this area as often as I would have liked. Earlier trips had resulted in larger, more complex paintings, which in hindsight felt overworked.
For this final visit, I deliberately chose smaller panels, aiming to simplify both composition and intention. Fresh Fish for Sale, The Crag, Aldeburgh reflects that shift. The painting is a direct response to the scene, pared back to its essentials. While the degree of success varies—as it always does—the attempt to reduce, clarify, and focus is central to the work.
