Aldeburgh, from the Beach, Evening Sun

Aldeburgh from the Beach, Evening Sun, was one of two paintings created from the same spot on the same day. It’s quite common for artists to work this way, as sometimes the light can change dramatically, allowing one to be inspired again. Using smaller boards and an approach that involves attempting a lot with a little helps facilitate an alla-prima effect, which usually results in a fresher and more painterly creation. This was also the first year that the Aldeburgh Windmill wasn’t covered in scaffolding, so it had to be done twice!

The sister painting to this one is called Aldeburgh from the Beach, Morning Sun, and can be found here.
