‘A New Day, Regent Street’ rightly takes its place amongst a new series of 10 limited-edition prints depicting iconic and quiet corners of London—each painted from life, each released in a small, collectible edition.

Even in winter, I like to rise early and get out to paint before the city fully wakes. On this particular grey weekday in London, I set up my easel on Regent Street while it was still dark. The moment stayed with me — night-shift workers were heading home as the day’s workers arrived, a quiet exchange that reminded me how many lives unfold simultaneously, often unseen.

The sun never quite broke through, and the atmosphere remained muted throughout the session — a flat, silvery grey that challenged me to soften my palette. I focused on capturing the elegant architecture of Regent Street with quiet restraint, allowing subtle tonal shifts to do the work. In contrast, small notes of high chroma — clothing, signs, and lights — provided moments of life and energy.

A New Day, Regent Street is part of my continuing series of plein air paintings exploring London as it unfolds in real time — unfiltered, lived-in, and deeply human.
